Gendarmes (French for policemen) or Landjäger (German for country police) is a semi dried sausage traditionally made in Switzerland. It is popular as a snack food during activities such as hiking. It also has a history as soldier’s food because it keeps without refrigeration and comes in single-meal portions.
These Gendarmes were made in Victoria by one of the last remaining authentic Swiss butchers, Walma’s. They are handmade with a combination of beef meat and pork fat as well as caraway seeds in order to get the authentic, Swiss taste.
This product is a limited edition in our shop – so grab it while it’s here.
The Gendarmes are sold in pairs.
All gendarmes will come in vacuum bags with a best before date of currently 24 November 2020.
Tip: The gendarmes will come in cry vac bags for ease of use and shelf life. With that they keep fairly soft. However, if you – like us – enjoy them a bit harder, simply take them out of the bags and leave them uncovered in the fridge for 2 to 3 days or until they show the desired consistency. Then put them back in a bag or plastic tub.
